THE GREAT RESET

For decades, travel has been sold as escape: sun, beaches, cheap flights, endless growth. But the realities shaping our world are changing the meaning of movement. Climate is already rewriting the rules of tourism. Summers in the Mediterranean are becoming dangerously hot, and cities like Barcelona are asking difficult questions about overtourism. In places such as Bali, rapid hotel and villa development has transformed landscapes so quickly that flooding, water stress, and environmental imbalance are now daily realities, not distant warnings.

At the same time, cultural heritage itself is becoming increasingly fragile. Across the Middle East, modern conflicts are placing some of humanity’s oldest historic landscapes at risk. Monuments and sites that have survived centuries now face destruction in moments, including iconic places such as Golestan Palace. When these places are damaged, it is not only architecture that disappears, but pieces of our shared human story.

This is why a reset in tourism is no longer optional. Climate pressures, housing shortages, water systems, local quality of life, and the vulnerability of cultural heritage now shape how travel must evolve. The old model—maximizing arrivals and compressing experiences into peak seasons—is colliding with environmental limits and social fatigue.
